Guide to student broadband and mobile broadband

If you’re a student then there are lots of things that end up costing more than you
thought they would in the first place and broadband can be one of them. Despite
the fact that there are a whole stack of different deals and offers out there in the
marketplace, many of us are still paying over the odds for getting a high-speed
connection.

There’s no need either, because thanks to the free comparison websites out there
online, it’s actually pretty easy to ensure that you pick the right deal and for the
right price. You’ll obviously need to spend a little bit of time doing some research
and picking through all of those deals, but it will be time well spent.

Where to start?

Of course, being a student means that you’re probably keen to save money
anyway, so first up you should get an idea of how much you think you need your
internet. For most of us the answer is going to be 24/7, plus you’ll also want a
decent amount of bandwidth and monthly data allowances if you’re into doing
lots of downloading or game playing online.

There used to be an issue with students getting home broadband, simply because
they often weren’t at the same address long enough to be able to get a contract.
However, ISPs have realised this now and several of these offer deals specifically
for students, so look out for them when you’re carrying out a comparison of
what’s on offer.

The other thing to be mindful of, however, is that not all ISPs have all their
products and services available in all areas. So, for example, if you’re a fan of
fibre optic cable broadband as popularised by the likes of Virgin Media, bear in
mind that this is not available all over the country. Nevertheless, if one service
isn’t available there’s usually something similar that will do the same job.

Get the deals

Another way of saving money is to consider deals that have freebies and other
incentives thrown in with them. You may get a contract that has cheaper initial
payment terms, or there may also be a free set-up and installation process as
part of the package. Meanwhile, have a look at bundling offers, where you add
together the likes of broadband, a landline and TV too as this can often be the
cheapest route to take.

If you only want to dabble in high-speed connectivity and need the freedom and
flexibility then mobile broadband
could be another way to go. Granted, mobile broadband isn’t really geared up for lots
of downloads and heavy internet users will want to opt for a contract package as it
comes with more generous allowances than a pay as you go package. The latter is
good because it doesn’t need a contract to be signed, but if you’re online for long
periods, then the contract package is going to be the one to look for. Again, keep an
eye on the deals and incentives that are being offered – the free laptop with mobile
broadband deal is one popular option you could consider.

Of course, the great thing about going mobile is that you can take your internet
connectivity with you, pretty much wherever you go too. So if you like to stay on
the move then this broadband option could perhaps be the best of the bunch.
