London’s Happiest Summer Happenings

| July 8, 2015 | 0 Comments

The summer months have to be the best time to be a student. Once your exams are out of the way, summer means no lectures, no stress and nothing but good times until you have to sign on again in September. Remember when people used to talk about your school days being the time of your life? They weren’t even close. The summer break in the college calendar is when student life really comes into its own.

Thinking for fun

But that doesn’t mean you have to turn your brain off completely.  If you’re one of those people whose grey matter needs full-time stimulation, you could do worse than treat it to a day out at the London Mind Sports Olympiad (LMSO).  Running from August 23rd to 31st at JW3, Finchley Road, NW3, the LMSO will certainly offer something to get the old cogs spinning. Whether your game of choice is chess, scrabble, backgammon, Carcassonne, Othello, Mastermind, Tetris, or poker, the LMSO will test you to the max. Of course, if you just want to make the most of your mental powers without having to get all the way to NW3, casinoshorts.com – best UK casino sites – will show you how you can get the same buzz wherever you are and whenever you want to play.

Freewheeling in the city

But if you’d rather leave your brain to freewheel (and why not when it’s hot?) there are plenty of events planned to keep you busy without having to work up a headache. How about Ride London? August 1st will see an eight-mile loop of central London closed off to traffic and gloriously given over to cyclists. With thousands upon thousands of cyclists, it’s a festival on two wheels. And like all the best festivals there’ll be loads going on besides the main event. And it’s free! All you need is a bike.

The Notting Hill Carnival is a noisier option, but if you want to see the city lit up with colour and bouncing with big beats, Notting Hill on August 30th is always a day to remember. What you make of it once you’re there is pretty much up to you. But that’s the spirit of carnival… anything goes!

Music, music, music

It goes without saying that there are all manner of fabulous music festivals being staged around the capital over the summer break. For super-club sounds South West Four in Clapham is the place to be on August 29th and 30th. Fatboy Slim and Basement Jaxx will be headlining. The Visions Festival in Hackney on August 28th will bring together some of the best underground artists, including The Antlers and Camera Obscura. Meanwhile, a very much more laid back and organic experience will be on offer at the start of the month at the Wilderness festival where Bjork and Ben Howard are topping the bill. If you’ve ever wanted to build your own yurt, Wilderness at Cornbury Park Oxon between the 6th and the 9th is the place to be.

But whatever you choose to do, make sure you have a good time. It’s what summer was invented for!
