How Can Poor Attendance And Truancy Affect Schooling?

| May 4, 2012 | 0 Comments

Education is vital to improve one’s chances in life. By achieving good grades people can further themselves, gain well-paid jobs and enjoy the finer things in life like a nice family car, home and clothes.

By attending school, students learn everything from important maths skills to be proper English but playing truant and not concentrating fully will affect this. It has been reported that the average pupil in some parts of Wales misses one whole year of schooling simply through poor attendance and this will only result in the child’s standards of achievement being shaken.

The figures, published by Rhondda Cynon Taf council in Wales, revealed that out of 12 years of statutory schooling, the average pupil only attends 11 years’ worth of classes. By truanting, a student is unlikely to do well in exams because they haven’t learnt everything which they would have done had they attended the classes.

According to the council, if a child has an attendance rate of 94% ,which equates to the missing of 10 days per year, they are more likely to accomplish five GCSEs at grade A*-C than they would be if their attendance was 90%, which likens to missing one day every fortnight.

Simply taking a child on a two-week holiday during term-time every year means that their attendance will never surpass 94%; and being just 15 minutes late every day is equivalent to losing two weeks of school every year.

Now although the findings were undertaken in Wales, the results are still effective for students across the UK including the capital London. Poor attendance and truancy can affect schooling!

The jobs market is tough at present and with difficult economic times, it is imperative that students give themselves the best start in life by attending lessons regularly and catching up on missed work. There is competition against peers for the higher grades so put the best foot forward and achieve the greater things in life by getting your nose into books and studying hard. Get the highest education possible by being present in all classes and lectures.
