Why you should consider selling your unused tech

Now that the holidays are over, it is time to take a look around the house and get rid of all those unused tech gadgets and gizmos.  In most households all over the world, there are probably a few old mobile phones, computers, mp3 players and other devices just lying around.

There’s no sense in keeping these old gadgets when there’s a regular release schedule of new and improved models, so instead of holding on and treating them as memorabilia, why not sell unused tech?  Selling used tech is particularly beneficial to students, as it can provide a little bit of extra cash to upgrade what they already have, pay for tuition or even cover other school expenses such as lab fees and text books.

The biggest question out there is usually, “How do I sell my stuff?”  Luckily, there is an excellent market for used tech.  While it helps if these gadgets are in good working condition, some buyers will accept those that are obsolete or broken, as they can be refurbished.  The possible markets for selling old gadgets range from friends and family to retailer buy-back programs and more.

Getting started

If someone has just one or two pieces of old technology to sell, the process is relatively simple – just sell the devices and get the cash!  However, most people tend to have a variety of different devices.  Consider how many iPhones have been released – if someone is currently using the iPhone 4S, he or she could have several older models lying around at home.  Make an inventory of all the items to be sold and separate them into a box or shelf in preparation for selling.

Rounding up old gadgets probably isn’t too much of a challenge for most people.  Old cell phones and cameras always have the highest resell value, even if they are broken!  Other easy sales are iPods and mp3 players, recent model laptops, e-readers and tablets.  Resellers and buyers typically aren’t interested in printers, stereos or fax machines.

While it is always tempting to sell devices as close to their original price, it is important to remember that technology loses its value quite quickly.  Also, items will sell faster when they are priced competitively.  A good rule of thumb is to price old tech at about 50% of its original price or a little less.

How to sell old tech

When it comes to selling old technology, the most obvious method is to do so online.  There are a number of websites that allow individuals to place ads or sell products – even used gadgets – to the general public.  The most successful sellers also take advantage of their contacts from social media networks to reach even more prospective buyers.

Another option for selling old tech is the “old fashioned” way.  It never hurts to put up a few flyers around campus, local bookstores and even the entryways of local tech shops.  Many students don’t even have to go that far if they ask friends and family if they know anyone interested in the available items.

When taking the right approach, unused tech can be sold quickly and profitably.  Of course, most people won’t make back all the money they put into these purchases in the first place, but it’s better than nothing.  And who knows, perhaps that extra cash can be used to buy the next hot item this year!
