Accidents Happen!

Accidents happen as the saying goes. Sometimes it’s your accident and sometimes it’s someone else’s but it’s not always the person who caused the accident who get’s hurt. it’s with this in mind that I write the article. There is a certain line between a simple accident and negligence where the person securing the equipment, driving the vehicle, carrying the heavy object, installing the shop window should have known and been trained better to anticipate the potential for injury to other people.

It’s very common for accidents to occur at work and at college or university. Maybe you or someone you know has slipped on a wet surface or has tripped over a cable. All environments provide dangers and risks and accidents can happen. The injuries suffered range from minor to severe, and they can impact your life significantly.

Employers and colleges have an obligation to ensure as safe of a working environment and to implement regulations to lessen the chance of accidents. Keep in mind that you are responsible for your own health and safety. So, in all environments, take the time to understand the potential risks and follow precautionary measures to help reduce the chances of having an accident.

Here’s a personal story:

I was working, during university in field marketing (promotions staff) and I was recruited for what seemed to be a fun job for a tea company. I was to wear a boiler backpack with hot water and the tank on my back had to be pressurized to a certain PSI. With a partner wearing the same apparatus, we were to distribute tea on the companies bus to workers at 8:30am.

Things were going well until I pressurized the boiler tank. I had been “trained” to fill the tank with water and pressurize the tank to a certain PSI. I was instructed and metal burst off the tank and hot water sprayed all over. This was before I got on the bus but my arm was burned.

So it’s an accident and who is responsible? I felt I was careful enough and I followed the instructions given so I was either trained poorly (and given the wrong instructions for pressurizing the tank) or the actual tank itself had malfunctioned or was poorly constructed.

My arm was badly burned which has since recovered but it took time. I did file a work accident compensation claim and received a small amount which helped pay the bills while I was seeing doctors and couldn’t work.

It’s impossible to prevent all accidents, but you can do your best to make sure you are healthy and follow safety protocol.
