The law student is an interesting creature. Most of their time, they have their heads in dry and dusty tomes listening to a dreary lecturer talk about the ins and outs of criminal law. Gone are the days where you had to settle for whatever textbook your university happened to use, though. With the Internet, you have access to an unlimited amount of knowledge on anything from environmental law to getting work experience.

Here are some of the best resources for law students who are still studying away at university and those preparing to leave and step onto the legal ladder.

Lexis Nexis

If you need a discount law book or want to find a bit of light reading to supplement your current course, look no further than Lexis Nexis. Lexis Nexis law books are all genuine and are relevant to the current state of the law industry. The proactive student will want to use this as it’s a complete database of the best literature on offer today.

There’s also a Knowledge Base where you can get more information on various aspects of the legal trade.

Duncan Gibbins Academy

The Duncan Gibbins Academy is one for the student who’s about to go into the real world. It provides a concrete insight into what you can expect from working as a solicitor. It also helps law graduates find employment in the legal trade, which is especially difficult these days.

The Student Appeal

The Student Appeal opts for a more casual and informal way of teaching. It charts the progress of real students and offers insights into what it’s like to study law and the various challenges you’ll encounter after university. It communicates information in easy-to-read blog posts.

The main attraction of this website is the fact that it’s good for people who’re still at the stage of trying to decide what they want to do at university.

The Girls Guide to Law School

Admittedly, this resource is geared towards American law schools. Whilst the actual laws themselves won’t be relevant to a UK student, many of the tips and guides still apply to working in any office in any part of the world. It’s run by a student who’s graduated from law school and now works as a solicitor.

She offers a light-hearted, and sometimes humorous, take on some of the things you’ll encounter in this industry.

Happy Go Legal

Here’s another resource dedicated to the almost-qualified solicitor. This handy resource provides guides for new solicitors who are just preparing to find their first job. It provides instructions on what to do during an interview, how to find a job, and how to deal with your first few outside clients.

University Pages

Check different universities for any free resources on their websites. They’re often available to the general public, so even if you don’t go to that university you can take advantage of some of the resources they’ve put up.

The London School of Economics (LSE) and the University of Bedfordshire have a lot of free articles on their websites.
